Margarita Salas: researcher in biochemistry and molecular biology

She was born in Asturias in 1938 and is a biochemist. She is one of the biggest promoters of research in biochemistry and molecular biology in Spain.

Salas carried out her work at a time when scientific research barely existed in Spain. Thanks to biochemistry that studies the chemical reactions that take place within cells, she managed to create one of the most profitable Spanish patents to date: DNA polymerase, a protein that intervenes in how cells replicate their DNA, essential in the subsequent development of genetics, genetic engineering and biomedicine.
